Congratulations to the 2024 New Zealand Space Scholarship recipients! 🎉👏 These post-graduate students will work on space-related projects guided by NASA Ames Research Center and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory mentors, gaining hands-on experience in their fields of study and access to NASA’s best and most advanced research facilities. 🧠 Alexandra McKendry from University of Canterbury will look at how neuromorphic computing could be used to expand the autonomous capabilities of small spacecraft while at NASA’s Ames Research Center. 🎓 Grace Jacobs Corban will help to develop science education material for NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program while at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. On her return she’ll begin a PhD in Maths Education at Victoria University of Wellington. 📡 Narottam Royal from University of Canterbury will intern at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he will work with NASA’s Deep Space Network, the largest and most sensitive telecommunications system in the world. 🚀 Axl Rogers is doing a PhD at the Auckland University of Technology and works at the Warkworth Space Centre. During his internship Axl will work with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory team that is using Delta Differential One-way Ranging technique to determine spacecraft position. 🌑 Tait Francis from the University of Otago will be looking at the composition of atmospheric aerosols on Saturn’s moon Titan during his internship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. 🛰 Faun Watson from Victoria University of Wellington has a research interest in sustainable satellite de-orbiting devices and will work with the Aerothermodynamics Branch at NASA’s Ames Research Center. They head to the US in June for 3-month internships at either the NASA’s Ames Research Center or Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Look out for updates about how they get on.

Today, 1 May 2024, the New Zealand – European Union free trade agreement enters into force. A number of names for cheese, alcohol and other goods can no longer be used for products in New Zealand unless the products are made in specific locations in Europe and are produced following specific rules. Terms such as Ouzo, Sherry, Port, Prosecco, Feta, Gruyère and Prosciutto di Parma are all now protected as geographical indications, under the New Zealand – European Union Free Trade Agreement. Restrictions on who can use these terms in trade now apply. Notably, some terms have phase-out periods for their continued use by New Zealand businesses.
